THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
mouth – teeth – tongue – saliva – oesophagus
stomach – gastric juices – thick liquid – small intestine
liver – pancreas – remains – large intestine – anus

What is the function of the digestive system? Digestion and absorption.

The digestive system breaks food down into nutrients.
Then these nutrients are absorbed into the body.

The digestive process starts in the mouth.
We chew food with our teeth and mix the food with saliva.

Our tongue pushes the food around our mouth to the oesophagus.
The oesophagus is a tube that connects the mouth and the stomach.

The oesophagus (British English) is also known as esophagus (American English).

The food travels down the oesophagus to the stomach.

The stomach is like a mixer.
The stomach uses gastric juices to turn the food into a thick liquid.

The thick liquid travels to the small intestine.
The small intestine breaks down the food mixture even more.

The liver and the pancreas send juices to the small intestine.
So that the body can now absorb the nutrients in the food.

The remains of the food go the large intestine.

The remains finally leave the body through the anus.
