METHODS FOR SEPARATING MIXTURES
evaporation – filtration – sieving – decantation – distillation
We can separate the substances in mixtures in different ways.
There are different methods of separation.
SEPARATING MIXTURES
Method | Evaporation
Evaporation is used to separate a solid dissolved in a liquid.
If we heat a mixture of salt and water,
the water evaporates
and leaves only the salt,
which forms crystals.

SEPARATING MIXTURES
Method | Filtration
Filtration is used to separate solids from liquids.
How? Through a filter.
The solids stay in the filter.
The liquid passes through it.
A strainer is a filter.
It separates pasta from water.
Air conditioning is a filter.
It separates pollen and dust in the air.
Face masks are filters.
They filter germs, smoke, and pollution in the air.

Method | Sieving
Sieving is used to separate solids of different sizes.
A sieve has tiny holes.
It separates sand and gravel or pebbles.
Sand will pass through the tiny holes.
Gravel or pebbles will not. They are too large.
