Plants make their own food. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food.

What do plants need to make their own food? They need sunlight, carbon dioxide and water and minerals from the soil.

The leaves absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide from the air.
The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.
The water and minerals pass through the stem to the leaves.

Plants make food in their leaves. Using energy from the Sun, the carbon dioxide combines with water, minerals and sunlight to make food.

During the process of photosynthesis plants make oxygen and release oxygen into the air.

People and animals need oxygen to breathe.
